My Black Hole

Not worth my tears,

Not worth my blood,

Yet, I still cry,

Yes, I still cut.

I feel so alone,

Just me, myself and I,

I always thought that was ok,

Turns out to have been a lie.

I know what I wanted to happen,

On this family holiday,

To spend some time alone with you,

Your face and actions scream stay away.

We should have had that talk,

Before we boarded the plane,

You didn’t want to do that though,

Didn’t notice I was in pain.

I know that I caused what you did,

You put up with me for long enough,

But you couldn’t bring yourself to talk to me,

Cheating? That was just rough.

I have never liked lies in any form,

The truth hurts but in a different way,

Now I question every single thing,

What you do and what you say.

Sitting in the back of this car,

Crying very quietly,

Our daughter and your mum on my left,

You driving and your dad in front of me.

Our boys are with your uncle,

Your brother’s driving them in the other car,

I am here all by myself,

Stupidly I didn’t think about it being so far.

I know its a few thousand miles,

Only for a couple of weeks,

It was way too soon to attempt this,

I’m praying my tears leave no streaks.

So what happens when we get home?

You’ve got her and I’ve got the kids,

You will continue to lie and to hurt me,

Truly, you are a shit.

I know you have a lot on your plate,

Losing your job and maybe your home,

I’m the last person you want to think about,

You think I just bitch and moan.

Even after all you have done,

I miss you more and more,

I know that you don’t want me,

My being the mother of your kids must be such a bore.

There is another man,

An interested party,

He sounds quite safe and better still,

He thinks he could like me.

For all my dislike of lies,

I haven’t been entirely honest,

I neglected to mention my disability,

My depression? That’s just a bonus.

I will come clean before we meet,

Of that I have no doubt,

To meet before I drop that bombshell,

Would be uncomfortable should he wish to back out.

I ‘met’ him on a dating site,

We exchanged numbers and started to text,

It seems we have a lot in common,

On paper, he could be perfect.

I thought I was ready to meet,

Someone new, to try to love again,

Unfortunately, I’m still head over heels,

With the man who chose to walk away?

Is it just me being stupid?

He picked her more than once,

He truly doesn’t want me,

I have to stop being such a dunce.

I have to toughen up now,

It’s been two years that I’ve been alone,

I really didn’t think I would manage,

I don’t usually cope well on my own.

This has to be the end now,

Life is too damned short,

He’d still be cheating on me now,

If only he hadn’t been caught.

He comes out smelling of roses,

Like washing powder, whiter than white.

Well if that’s how it is going to be,

Then I’ll have to be alright.

Alright is exactly what I will be,

I have to be and that’s that,

I’m a dog person anyway,

Not going to be the lady with more than one cat!!

Poems by Keith Atkissoon

Another windy day

What’s the ocean for but to stare out over

Huddled and cold, my hair blows and twists

Gulls pour up the cliffs, keeping silent today

Some hover and watch me from a distance

Some dive and head out over the crests of waves

Skimming the cold current

They steal my wind

The wind that draws me closer to the edge

Do they see my eyes blurred by tears?

The wind blows hard against my face

Reddening my cheeks, I shiver in the cold

Even the breaking waves have gone quiet

A mournful uneasiness over the sand

Is no one laughing today?

I hear nothing but another windy day

The whitecaps strum a silent song offshore

Sailboats glide slowly miles away

And while clouds gather, shadows grow long

Then a grey-deadened sea follows the sun

As it continues to vanish past the horizon

Bringing a gull-empty sky and whispering tones of sirens

Who cried the sea?

Was it me?

Not only me, but many more, the many who

Gaze out over the water every day, wishing, hoping, and praying

For the future to come, or for the past to return

To an indifferent sea, it’s just another windy day.

Seeing my friend

Not me ,by me

Beside the sweet mist

Me, myself, my thoughts can’t resist

The vision plays out some every day

Is there anybody there? Listen I say

I’m waiting for a friend, a still empty chair

Can see them so clearly, me sitting there

Our voices, the song, and dripping good times

A neverland appears when I open my eyes

Things that aren’t real, rarely surprise

I need to go back to what I said before

My beautiful friend never comes through the door

To sit by me, and pay me some mind

Or give me a call, to just take the time

I see what’s there and it’s none of your mind

My friend’s soft words, they remind

Of lives that we lived and loves long ago

Tell each other stories of childhoods ago

I am my best friend, the only one I know

The one in the chair?

Their names’ alone

This so special bond, between twilight and dusk

As a stilted connection, and is so and such.

My friend just blurred, this thought crossed my mind

The time we next meet, I will find

The chair still empty, that’s not what I see

I see a friend

But I’m talking to me.

Lonely

I thought you would stand by me forever

but, we were never meant to be together

so many days have passed since we have parted

I was the one left broken hearted

so many nights I’ve spent being lonely

Thinking about you, my only

Nights and days have broken into years,

while i drowned myself in my own tears

O, how slowly the moon wanes

How my heart pains,

My concerto soothing what’s left of my sane mind

Even that i have left behind

No i lay waiting for death

The day i will draw my last breath

Gray Death
The warm colors of fall have faded
Now the death of winter has raided
The first flakes begin to fall
I hardly notice them at all
White tears falling down from the sky
Why, oh why do the Angels cry?
Can they see through the sky so white,
The pain that plagues day and night?
“This gray death shall consume us all,”
On the icey winds the Angels do call
So as your body begins to numb,
From your mouth a white fog will hum
A piece of your soul on Angels’ wings will fly
Leaving your body behind to die.
Whispers of the Wind
All has come to twilight
Soon the fallow of night
But still I waited
Breath baited
Answers, the Wind does hold
Secrets untold
I hear its beckoning when the darkness falls
“Pain” are its calls
The Whispering Wind has long since faded
But here I stay, breath baited
The Sea
I don’t care what you say
Your words like pebbles thrown into the sea
Washed away
They didn’t even touch me
Lost into the shadows below
Settling as far down as they can go
To far to swim, you should know
But down to the bottom and back I go
Try me
Others took their hit
They made a puddle a sea
That’s what I make of it
Back down, but others will come
The sea will condemn them foe or friend
Some pebbles will join the others… some
Untouchable, I will remain, until the end
Phantom Father
You danced through my childhood, ghostly
Memories of you, I never had
You wish you were there, regrettably
You my Phantom Father
I learned to do without
I never felt sad
Unwanted love you sent about
You my Phantom Father
Now your back to make things “right”
Like a cow to the slaughter, you fallow the latest fad
I never needed you to tuck me in at night
You my Phantom Father
Give up the fight
You want a second chance, sorry but too bad
Your time has come to twilight
You my Phantom Father
Give me peace, now is the end
I’m sorry if I made you sad
All your love back to you I send
Goodbye to you,
My Phantom Father

Senses

Can you hear the dripping
of my tears? Can you see
the sadness on my face?
can you feel the pain that
I’m in now? Can you smell
the scent of my discomfort?
Or are your senses dead?
Do you not know what is
going on, do you not know
what to think. Don’t look at
me, turn your head, just look
away toward all of the happier
people who are here.
